Website Redesign UK: What It Really Involves

4 September 2026  ·  website redesign uk

If your website's looking a bit tired, loads slowly, or just doesn't feel like "you" anymore, you're not alone. A lot of small business owners I speak to know their site needs work but aren't sure what a redesign actually involves — or whether it's worth the money. So let's clear that up.

I'm Jamie, and I build and redesign websites for small businesses, mostly around Hythe and Kent, but I work with people further afield too. Here's what a proper website redesign in the UK actually looks like, without the jargon.

Signs your website needs a redesign

You don't need a redesign just because your site is old. Plenty of older sites still do the job. Here's what actually tells me a redesign is worth having:

  • It looks noticeably dated compared to your competitors
  • It's slow to load, especially on a phone
  • It's hard to update yourself, or you're paying someone every time you need a tweak
  • It doesn't show up well on Google anymore
  • You've changed what your business does, and the site doesn't reflect that

If a couple of those sound familiar, it's probably time. If none do, save your money — a redesign for the sake of it isn't worth it.

What actually happens during a redesign

Starting with what's there

I always start by looking at your current site properly — what's working, what isn't, what pages actually get visited, and what your customers are likely trying to do when they land on it. There's no point rebuilding something that was already doing its job well.

Rebuilding with a clear structure

Most redesigns aren't about making things flashier. They're about making things clearer — a simpler menu, a homepage that says what you do straight away, and pages that don't make people hunt for your phone number or opening hours.

Getting the technical basics right

A redesign is also a good chance to sort things that don't show but matter a lot: how fast the site loads, whether it works properly on mobile (most of your visitors will be on their phone), and whether Google can actually read and understand your pages.

How long a website redesign takes

Honestly, it depends on the size of the site, but for most small businesses I work with, a full redesign takes a few weeks from first chat to going live. That includes time for you to look things over and ask for changes — I'd rather get it right than rush it out the door.

What it doesn't involve is months of back-and-forth or waiting on a big team. It's me, doing the work, talking to you directly.

What it costs

I won't pretend there's one number that fits every business, because a five-page site for a local tradesperson is a different job to a site with online booking or a shop built in. But I always talk pricing plainly upfront — no vague quotes, no surprise invoices halfway through. You'll know what you're paying for before we start.

An optional extra: Lyla

Alongside redesigning websites, I also build my own product called Lyla — an AI front desk that can sit on your site as an optional add-on. It's not something every business needs, and I won't push it on you if it doesn't fit, but for some sites it makes sense.

The idea behind Lyla is simple: it can answer common questions from visitors, point them to the right page, or take basic details, even when you're busy or the shop's shut. It's not a chatbot bolted on as an afterthought — it's built to actually understand what your business does, because I set it up myself alongside the redesign.

If that sounds useful, great — we can talk about it when we redesign your site. If it doesn't, that's absolutely fine too. Your redesign will work perfectly well without it.

Choosing who does the redesign

There's no shortage of agencies and freelancers offering website redesigns across the UK. What I'd say, having done this a good while, is: ask who you'll actually be dealing with. With a lot of agencies, you brief one person and someone else entirely builds your site. With me, that's not how it works — you talk to me from the first message to the site going live, and afterwards if you need anything changed.

That's the whole idea behind ArloWebStudio. It's not an agency pretending to be personal — it's genuinely one person doing the work properly, plainly, without the sales talk.

If your site needs bringing up to date, I'd be glad to have a straightforward chat about what that would involve for your business — no pressure, no jargon. Have a look at some of the work and get in touch through ArloWebStudio whenever you're ready.
