Wix Website Cost: What You Actually Pay For

Someone asked me the other week what a Wix site really costs once you add everything up. Good question, because the answer isn't the £16 a month you see on the pricing page. That's just where it starts.

The Wix website cost nobody mentions upfront

Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, they're all the same idea. You pay a monthly fee to rent space on their platform, and on top of that you pay for the plan level you actually need to run a proper business site, not a hobby page.

What tends to get added on

• A better plan for ecommerce or bookings, usually the pricier tiers
• Apps from their marketplace for basic things like forms, popups or reviews
• A business email address, often billed separately
• More storage or bandwidth once your site grows

None of this is hidden exactly, it's just spread across different pages so the headline price looks smaller than the real one. Add it up over three or four years and it's not nothing.

You never actually own it

Here's the bit that matters more than the monthly fee. With Wix, you're renting. Stop paying and the site disappears. Want to move it somewhere else one day? You mostly can't, not without starting again from scratch. That's the trade off with any page builder platform, you get convenience now in exchange for being tied in for as long as you use it.

What hand coded actually means

I don't use Wix, WordPress or any page builder. I build sites from scratch, by hand, with code written for that one business. No template underneath, no plugin doing the heavy lifting, no licence fee to a platform every month.

Why that's not just a technical detail

• It's faster. No bloated builder code running in the background means pages load quicker, which matters for visitors and for Google.

• It doesn't look like everyone else's. Page builder sites often share the same bones underneath, even with different colours slapped on. A hand coded site is built around your business, not squeezed into someone else's structure.
• No monthly rent to a platform. You're not paying Wix a subscription forever just to keep your own website online.

It takes more skill and more time to build this way, which is honestly why most cheap website offers skip it. But for a small business that wants something that loads fast, looks like it belongs to them, and doesn't lock them into a subscription forever, it's worth it.

So how does the actual cost compare

This is the honest part. A hand coded site usually costs more upfront than signing up to Wix and picking a template. That's real and I won't pretend otherwise. What you're paying for is someone building the thing properly, once, rather than assembling it from parts.

Where it evens out is afterwards. No ongoing platform fee eating into your bank balance every single month. No forced upgrade to a pricier plan because you added a booking form. No slow creeping cost as your site grows. You pay for the build, and then it's yours.

Questions worth asking before you decide

• How much will I actually be paying in a monthly subscription three years from now?
• If I wanted to switch providers later, could I take my site with me?
• Is my site fast on a phone, on an ordinary connection, not just on office wifi?
• Does my site look like my business, or like a template with my logo dropped in?

If those questions make you wince a bit, that's usually the sign a rented, templated setup isn't giving you what you think it is.

Who this is actually right for

I'll be straight with you, Wix isn't a bad choice for everyone. If you need something up this afternoon and you're happy fiddling with it yourself, it does the job. But if you're a small business that wants a site to represent you properly for years, one that loads quickly, looks like nobody else's, and doesn't quietly cost more every year you keep it, hand coded is worth the conversation.
